National Drug & Alcohol Recovery Month

By Elle Ryan, Mental Health Clinician

With 43.7 million people in the U.S. over the age of 12 needing some kind of substance use treatment within the past year, September’s National Drug and Alcohol Recovery Month reminds us that recovery is achievable. National Recovery Month recognizes over 20 million Americans in treatment for substance misuse and its recovery services providers, while also encouraging those struggling with addiction to seek professional help.

Every Person, Every Family, Every Community. For many in addiction recovery, sobriety is a trial with ongoing challenges and uncertainty. Starting a recovery journey is scary and uncertain, and also necessary in order to adapt to a new sober lifestyle. Recognizing the stories of those in recovery and their loved ones can be the best way to learn how to support those in recovery and those who are sober curious. Sharing these stories helps break the stigma around addiction and mental health, and spreads hope that recovery is possible.

Every recovery journey is different, with its own obstacles unique to the individual. From celebrities, sports figures, co-workers, neighbors, friends and family, we all experience highs and lows, both big and small. The strength, support and hope we find from others and those we love help make us resilient. National Recovery Month aims to increase awareness and understanding of mental health and substance use disorders, while celebrating those who recover.
