I Am Hope

by Lindsay Caldwell, MS, Resident in Counseling

“CHORONZON: I am anti-life, the beast of judgement. I am the dark at the end of everything. The end of universes, Gods, worlds… of everything. And what will you be then, Dreamlord?”
MORPHEUS: I am hope.”
― Neil Gaiman, The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes & Nocturnes

Suicide is a devastating reality that affects far too many individuals and families around the world. It’s important to remember that behind every suicide statistic, there is a real person with a unique story and struggles. If you or someone you love is struggling with thoughts of suicide, know that you are not alone and help is available. There is always hope, even in the darkest of times.

There are many warning signs of suicide and effective techniques for suicide prevention that can make a real difference in someone’s life. Warning signs of suicidality include but are not limited to the following:

1. Talking about feelings of hopeless or worthlessness; having no reason to live

2. Increased drug and alcohol use

3. Withdrawing from friends and activities

4. Increased agitation or irritability

5. Giving away prized possessions.

These symptoms vary from person to person and can look very different based on how well you know the individual. Spotting these warning signs can be difficult, especially when we are hoping for the person to be their happiest self. Reassuring them that they are not alone and that it’s not wrong for them to feel this way can greatly benefit their well-being.

Giving support to someone who is experiencing suicidal ideation can be scary. We can overthink on what to say and overlook what that person may need from us. Supporting someone who is in this position may involve talking to them about their thoughts and feelings, helping them to develop a safety plan, encouraging them to participate in self-care activities, offering hope and reassurance, and connecting them with a mental health professional.
